Community engagement
We engage with the local community in Lambeth and Southwark to both inspire them about the latest healthcare technology being developed and listen to their views and perspectives on what matters most to them. The HRC is located at St Thomas’ campus, which houses The London Institute of Healthcare Engineering, a pioneering hub for MedTech start-ups and SMEs, co-located with St Thomas’ Hospital.

Connect with local communities to broaden the impact of the HRC on their lives and build relationships to enable the community to influence research practice.
Working with We Rise Charity
The HRC supported We Rise - a local charity in Brixton, in a speed mentoring session on 14th Nov 2024 at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering. HRC EDI Lead Dr Bindu G Nair, HRC Heart Diseases in Children Lead Dr Nick Byrne and Research Manager Ms Ugochi Akerele were among the mentoring speakers. The session was aimed to provide career inspiration to young people in the age group 16-18 from secondary schools in Lambeth.

Lambeth Country Show
Researchers interacted with local residents of South London during the annual Lambeth Country Show at Brockwell Park, held over a weekend in July. HRC staff at the Science Big Top stand discussed topics such as using Artificial Intelligence to classify diseases, the presence of radioactivity in our environment, and hosted an engaging, interactive collage art activity for children.

Heartificial Intelligence
Heartificial Intelligence is an interactive installation created by a collaboration between artists, Evelina Children's Heart Organisation Teens and researchers whose work explores themes of trust, bias and data in AI. Through a series of workshops, the group discussed the possibilities and limitations of AI research while capturing the process through film and photography.
